Karen Daye-Hutchinson - History of Practice
Karen Daye-Hutchinson studied Fine Art at both Belfast and Manchester. Specialising in hybrid printmaking, book art and sculpture; her work reflects an interest in habitat, architecture and literature. Using line and colour as a language to explore the parameters of printmaking, with symbolism as an allegory; deconstructing situations, fairy tales, nursery rhymes or poetry that are part of childhood and adult culture.
Karen’s studio is located at Conway Mill, Belfast; dedicated artists’ studios in an old mill on the famous Falls Road.
Karen was a director and trustee at BPW, Belfast Print Workshop from 2005 - 2019. The studio is home to around 70+ local printmakers, a mixture of keen amateurs and professional artists. She can be found here making large print works and teaching courses on etching with aquatint.
In 2019 Karen was elected to join the prestigious ‘Prism Print International‘ a collection of masterly printmakers from around the globe.
To date she has been included in Prism10-Belfast, Prism 11-Tokyo and Prism12-Stockholm.
Collaboration has been an important element of Karen’s practice; enriching both knowledge and experimentation. She has worked over an intensive two year period 2013-2014 with fellow Belfast Artist Helen Lavery on several projects gaining two large credible exhibitions that have been show in Belfast; ‘Parenthesis’ and ‘Ellipsis’. Elements of the two collections have travelled to many locations internationally including the ‘International Print Symposium in Luxembourg’, in 2018 to include Artist’s Books and hybrid print editions. Other notable collaborations in print and film with Liam B de Frinse and current explorations with Jonny McEwen, Painter.
